ITEC 2016: Elbit Delivers MTC to Colombian air force
Elbit Systems has delivered a multi-cockpit mission training centre (MTC) to an undisclosed air force customer in Latin America, understood to be Colombia.
The MTC, referred to by Elbit as
SkyBreaker, has been designed to provide networked aircraft training for fighter pilots as well as ground controllers.
The company’s first experience of large MTC projects took place in Israel for the
IDF’s F-16 and F-15 aircraft.
The MTC, said Elbit, is, ‘built according to the latest simulation requirements and training concepts [and] provides complex tactical training to fighter pilots, ground controllers and operators of a wide variety of aircraft systems, participating simultaneously in an advanced simulation arena, along with dozens of friendly and enemy computer generated forces (CGF)’.
Although in true Israeli style, Elbit would not release the name of the customer, Shephard sources in Chile have confirmed that the MTC has been installed in Colombia and is used for the Israeli-built Kfir C-10 and C-12 training.
The initial solicitation was made by the Colombian air force (
FAC) in 2012.
Elbit says the customer can use the training centre for basic and emergency procedures training all the way to advanced mission based networked training with up to 24 trainees taking part in the exercise.
As well as the hardware, the MTC contract also includes a turnkey component that will see Elbit Systems staff support and maintain the system in conjunction with the customer's operational staff and technicians.
The MTC has been, say Elbit, constructed in Latin America, and has been specifically designed according to customer requirements. Elbit says that the system’s open-architecture software enables the customer to add future upgrades as avionics systems evolve or new weapons and sensors are added.
In another sign of the MTC’s sophistication, Elbit says that it features a Roll-In-Roll-Out (RIRO) design to accommodate future aircraft platform expansion.
‘The features of the mission training centre simulator are based on Elbit Systems’ SkyBreaker, a market-leading training solution,’ said Elbit Systems Aerospace Division's General Manager, Yoram Shmuely.
‘By implementing our SkyBreaker proven, cutting- edge technologies and train as you fight concept in the Mission Training Center, we enable pilots to conduct realistic, up-to-date training exercises, bringing them to the forefront of flight simulation.’
Although the S&T industry has long talked about a growing market in Latin America, the Elbit contract highlights just how sophisticated many countries in the region have become in procuring state of the art training systems.
