April 24, 1967-Lieutenant Commander Charles E. Southwick and Ensign James W. Laing, flying an F-4 Phantom II of Fighter Squadron (VF) 114 off the carrier Kitty Hawk (CVA 63), engaged North Vietnamese MiG-17 fighters over the enemy air base at Kep. They shot down one enemy jet, but their plane suffered battle damage that forced them to eject over the Tonkin Gulf. In this photograph, Ensign Laing has just punched out, soon to be followed by Southwick.
