Members of Fighting Squadron (VF) 6 pose in front of a tent on Guadalcanal with propeller blades marked with Japanese flags indicating the number of kills scored by the squadron during the campaign.

On Guadalcanal, Sergeant John Davis examines the wreckage of a TBF-1 Avenger flown by Ensign Albert K. Earnest during his service with Torpedo Squadron (VT) 8 during the campaign for the embattled island. Note the silhouette of a torpedo hit scored during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in August 1942.

An SBD Dauntless of Scouting Squadron (VS) 5 roars off the deck of the carrier Enterprise (CV 6) for an early morning attack against Tulagi/Guadalcanal as part of Operation Watchtower on August 7, 1942, seventy-one years ago today. Manning the aircraft were Lieutenant Turner F. Caldwell, the squadron skipper, and ACRM(AA) Willard E. Glidewell. During operations off Guadalcanal, VS-5 participated in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, and also operated from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal as part of Flight 300, a mixture of aircraft from Enterprise, during August-September 1942. Caldwell commanded Flight 300 during this time.

The rustic conditions at Henderson Field and surrounding airfields on Guadalcanal are evident in this view of a Marine Corps F4F Wildcat returning from a combat mission.
