Close-up view of a TBD-1 Devastator of Torpedo Squadron (VT) 6 off the carrier Enterprise (CV 6) on the ground with other squadron aircraft at Oakland, California, on June 11, 1939, seventy-four years ago today. This aircraft, Bureau Number 0324, was eventually transferred to VT-8 and was shot down during the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942. Killed in action were the pilot, Ensign Ulvert M. Moore, and gunner, Aviation Radioman Third Class William F. Sawhill. In March 1944, the Navy commissioned a destroyer escort named in honor of Moore. Interestingly, her first skipper was Lieutenant Commander Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., son of the President of the United States.
Marine Attack Squadron (VMA) 513, the "Flying Nightmares," will disestablish this year. Here is an image highlighting the legacy of the squadron during its seven decades of service. It shows members of Marine All Weather Fighter Squadron (VMF(AW)) 513 at K-8 airfield in Kunsan, South Korea, circa 1952.
TBF Avengers, F4F Wildcats and an SNJ Texan tied down on the flight deck of the training aircraft carrier Sable (IX 81) operating on Lake Michigan on June 10, 1943, seventy years ago today. Perhaps one of these Wildcats is one of the airplanes recovered after crashing into the lake during the war.
