On July 21, 1946, sixty-seven years ago today, Lieutenant Commander James Davidson flew an XFD-1 Phantom in the first U.S. test of the adaptability of jet aircraft to shipboard operation. The launches and recoveries occurred on board the aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB 42).

An F-111B, part of the TFX (Tactictal Fighter Experimental) program that sought to use one type aircraft to meet U.S. Air Force requirements for a fighter-bomber and U.S. Navy requirements for a carrier-based interceptor, pictured during flight operations on board the carrier Coral Sea (CVA 43) in 1968. The airplane did not meet the Navy's needs, the sea service instead turning to a Grumman aircraft, the F-14 Tomcat.
