The dogfight took place off the coast of Penang, Malaysia, Jun. 16, 2014, during “Cope Taufan 2014″ a biennial LFE (large force employment) exercise taking place June 9 to 20 designed to improve U.S. and Malaysian combined readiness.

U.S. Navy Lieutenant (junior grade) J.M. Baucom ejects from the cockpit of an Vought RF-8A Crusader (BuNo 145634) of Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron VFP-62 on 13 November 1963. He ejected safely and was picked up by rescue helicopter. The helicopter, however, crashed 5 km from Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia (USA), due to engine problems, but both the helicopter crew and the rescued pilot were uninjured.
The 929th Fighter Regiment has received the newer Su-22M4 fighter bombers to replace the aging MiG-21. This transfer will help them to gain experience with Sukhoi aircrafts and prepare them for more modern aircrafts in near future. The maritime strike capabilities are also greatly boost, thanks to the advance air-to-ground and anti-ship weaponry of the Su-22M4. The remaining MiG-21 will be kept in reserve.
